Rovak, known in the fight pits of Badeguard as The Buried, is an orcish barbarian who is noted for being the only survivor of a severe cave collapse in one of the mines of Baelstrad.

History

Rovak grew up in a traditional orc tribe in the forests of The Orc Badlands. After his tribe was routed during a failed raid, Rovak was sold into slavery as a young teen. His orcish constitution soon marked Rovak as a valuable "asset", so Rovak eventually wound up being sold to the Mining Consortium.

Working for the Mining Consortium

A few years into working as a "subterranean asset recovery specialist", Rovak was sent to work in an extremely poorly-maintained mineshaft. As the consortium well knew, the mine had been structurally weakened by years of neglect, though Rovak and his team were deployed nontheless. Halfway into their second workday, the mine collapsed.

Trapped in the mine, choking on volcanic gases, Rovak was the only one of the dozen miners on the crew to survive the initial rockfall. The stress of the slowly rising water, and the grief of losing his close colleagues served to drive Rovak into a trance-like state. He conceptualised himself as the living embodiment of his perished friends, the vessel of the spirits of his dead crew. It was this trance that allowed Rovak to survive the ordeal, though he left the mine with a great deal more voices in his head and scars than when he entered.

Gladiator Career

After he escaped the mine, Rovak took some time to develop more control over the spiritual possession he had undergone, and started to use it to his advantage. He returned to the city of Badeguard and took up a career as a gladiator in the fight pits, going by the moniker of The Buried. That stage name also came to be the name by which he referred to the spirits that he allowed to possess him. His gladiator career eventually culminated in him reaching the final of the great competition.

Personality

Rovak is stern, but generally good-natured, with a strong appreciation for the simple fineries in life. He is extremely respectful of the dead due to his experiences, and reacts poorly when he sees anybody disrespecting them.

When using The Buried, the possession leaves Rovak as a near-mute shell of untempered rage, seeing with the eyes of a dozen dead.
