Coming Together

The campaign begins in the fighting pits of Badeguard, the capital city and western island of Baelstrad, the furthest east nation in Baleteia. It is possible that all heroes hail from Badeguard, but that isn't necessary. Despite the campaign beginning in Badeguard, the majority of the adventure takes place on the larger island of Baelstrad.

The heroes may know each other, although this is unlikely. All characters will, however, be aware of the man bringing the party together: the democratic leader of Baelstrad Horstor Tlastra. Horstor is old by his dwarven standards, keeping his political position for three centuries. His hair has grown stark white against dark and scarred skin, his eyes the colour of cold iron. He is known to be a temperate leader, not known to turn violent easily despite the fighting pits situated on his capital island. As the one hosting the tourney of a lifetime, he is the trigger for the campaign.

Alignments

There is no restriction on character alignments in the campaign. The heroes aren't likely to be evil as they would be unlikely to fit with the goals and motivations of the party, but any character can seek glory from the fighting pits and beyond.

Ancestries

Badeguard as an island city is incredibly diverse and therefore open-minded and unlikely to judge anyone based on ancestry. However, with the fears people have of the mainland Baelstrad, anyone with links to the fey, whether through ancestry or academia - e.g. speaking Sylvan - would be immediately looked upon with suspicion at best and sentenced to certain death at worst. Most people living on Badeguard would be unaware of Aklo, however those few who understand brief utterances of it would likely be forced by morals alone to deal with the speaker as they see fit. Otherwise any ancestry makes a good fit for the campaign.

Classes

Members of nearly any classes would be perfect for the campaign, but there are exceptions. Gunslinger and Inventor would be thematically inappropriate and thus a bad fit for the campaign. Otherwise, this guide recommends a character that may thrive in the realms of deception and diplomacy when dealing with the inhabitants of the mainland. Moreover, keen fighters are key for thriving in the fighting pits and beyond, but do not underestimate the power of a Bard or other magic wielders for the campaign. Truly, any class can be played in this adventure, but be prepared for battle!

Languages

As a rule of thumb, Common is required and useful for characters, however there are others that would assist players. Despite its dangers, Sylvan could be highly useful for numerous situations, as well as Aklo. Otherwise, it may prove useful to pick up a few others for knowledge's sake.
