Guthrum is a dwarven ranger who participated in the investigation of Plaguestone in the year 4719AR. He is known for a keen hunter's mind, and a mistrust of orcs inherited from his clan.

History

Guthrum was born in Elidir, and spent much of his early years as part of the small dwarven community there. As the ninth son of a skilled but unimportant blacksmith, Guthrum spent much of his youth in the background, observing the hustle and bustle of the city around him. It was with this curiosity fostered as a child, that on his twenty-fifth birthday, upon completion of the Steelspine test, he set off from Elidir to tour the world.

Ambushed in Nirmathas

A few years into his travels, in 4499AR, Guthrum was ambushed by goblin bandits whilst traversing northern Nirmathas. He was wounded in the attack, and would have surely been killed or enslaved had it not been for the intervention of the Greenskin Hunters. Guthrum chose to join the mercenary band, seeking a kindred spirit amongst the dwarven group. It was with them that he learnt medicine, and the basics of wilderness survival.

Wartime service

After serving with the hunters for nearly three-quarters of a century, Guthrum chose to leave the group, as he had grown tired of being motivated by little more than ancestral grudges and the promise of coin. From then on, Guthrum wandered the lakelands, helping the wounded and hunting the cruel.

Guthrum served as a scout and a field medic in numerous conflicts over the years, the most major being:

  • The Chelish Civil War, where he served as a medic in a neutral field hospital.
  • The Freedom War, where he acted as a scout for the rebel forces.
  • The Goblinblood Wars, where he acted as a medic and an archer for the Isgerian army.

Time as a ranger

After the Goblinblood Wars, Guthrum settled once again in Isger, this time taking up life as a ranger in the northern foothills of the Aspodell Mountains. He lived happily here, taking care of the wilderness as best as he could, and keeping in check any unnatural predators in the ecosystem.

A few years after establishing a presence in the area, in 4703AR, Guthrum ran into Noala Kesserit, an elven ranger, whose territory bordered his. The two got along well, despite ancestral factors, and they became firm friends over the next few years.

Fighting alchemical evils

Main article: The Fall of Plaguestone

In 4719AR, Guthrum was ambushed and injured in the woods around Plaguestone by an alchemically corrupted wolf, but was found by his old friend Noala, and brought back to the town for treatment. It was then, as a favour to her, that he joined the investigation of the alchemical goings-on in the town.

Journey to Olfden

After the threat in Plaguestone had been vanquished, Guthrum and three of his companions agreed to make the journey to Olfden to flog the proceeds of their quest against Vilree. Having said a tender goodbye to Noala, Guthrum left Isger behind, and settled on the outksirts of Olfden for some time, living happily with the strange little group.

Personality

Guthrum is compassionate, keen to treat any acquaintances if they have ills, and respectful of the natural world. When faced with adversity, he is a fierce combatant, and rarely shows mercy to those who have seriously wronged him or those he cares for. He has inherited a distrust of giants, goblinoids, and orcs, though he makes efforts to ensure this is only unchained in combat.
